Domaine de Rome Fort lies five minutes from the medieval pilgrimage site of St Leonard de Noblat. This town, as well as Domaine de Rome Fort, are situated along the centuries-old pilgrimage route to St Jacques de Compostela Ella (Spain) and Rome. The origin of the word refers to Rome (Fort Romaeus) and fort, a solid and secure place to protect pilgrims (Roman Catholic). Domaine de Rome Fort lies in the region of the Haute Vienne (just above the Dordogne) and is 20 kilometers from the city of Limoges. This area is ideal for hikers and families who love nature (this is a great place, for example, for family reunions). Domaine de Rome Fort is an old farm which has been transformed into 11 luxurious cottages plus a chambre d'hote (bed & breakfast). Domaine de Rome Fort is situated on grounds of 28 hectares which contains fields and woods. A number of accommodations were renovated in 2008. The swimming pool was built after the summer of 2008. The environment is very diverse, green and hilly and the views from here are magnificent! Around the 28 hectares lies woods where you can take a walking tour of one hour. Along this route you can find places to rest or have something to eat. On the east side of Fort Rome you will find the extensive area around Lac de Vassiviere. This lake is 10 square kilometers and provides the opportunity to enjoy a number of water sports. The forests in the immediate surroundings are ideal for hiking and mountain biking. 15 minutes away (by car) there is a recreational lake which has a beach with lifeguards and a space for a variety of activities. Along the field lies the Vienne River which is suitable for canoeing. Along the river you will see many watermills that are still in use.
