Accommodation
Delightfully situated in secluded and peaceful surroundings, just a quarter of a mile from the heart of Hawkshead village, Yew Bank stands in almost 2 acres of landscaped gardens and woodland with superb views over Esthwaite Water towards Claife Heights, Latterbarrow and Kirkstone Pass. Dating from 1880 and adjoining another cottage, this stylish and spacious Lakeland residence has double glazing and is well furnished and equipped to provide very comfortable accommodation. The house has associations with Beatrix Potter, who lived in nearby Sawrey, and is well known for her children’s books featuring Peter Rabbit and his friends, but less well known as a successful Lakeland farmer and breeder of Herdwick sheep. The garden, enclosed by stone walling, has a patio, generous lawns and shrubs and a little bridge over a stream, making this a quiet retreat in a truly majestic location. In nearby Hawkeshead, one of the Lake District’s most attractive villages, there are narrow streets, whitewashed cottages and little alleyways and courtyards, as well as an excellent selection of shops, inns and restaurants. The old grammar school, famous for its former pupil William Wordsworth, is now a museum, and the Beatrix Potter Gallery (NT) can also be found here. On the doorstep is some of the Lake District’s finest scenery. Windermere is the largest lake in England, best appreciated by taking a boat trip from Bowness to Ambleside. Also within easy reach is beautiful Coniston Water with the village of Coniston (5 miles) nestling beneath the fells, and The Old Man of Coniston, rising majestically above. Overlooking the lake is the former home of another of Lakeland’s famous inhabitants, the influential artist and writer, John Ruskin, which is now a museum commemorating his work. Shops and pub ½ mile. Living room with large picture windows and gas ‘living-flame’ fire in antique surround. Dining room. Small sitting-room. Modern fitted kitchen with breakfast bar. Pitch pine stairs to first floor: Double bedroom with Lakeland views. Two twin bedrooms with views to the fells. Bathroom with shower cubicle and toilet. Shower room with toilet. Lower ground floor: Two bedrooms, each with large picture windows and views of garden; one double and one twin. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Utility.
